Ralph
and his handler
Patrolman Kurt Carpenter

Born October 1, 2003 in Swansea, Wales, U.K., Ralph was bred specifically for
his nose and drive.
Ralph is almost 3 years old- he was
purchased the Summer of 2005 from
Tar Heel Kennels- for $6000, which included three weeks of handler training.
The funds were raised from donations
from private individuals and groups like the LIONS Club. The balance was
raised through DARE
Fundraisers such as the golf tournament, basketball tournaments etc,
All of the dogs expenses, vet bills, etc, are paid for through DARE.
Ralph was sold to Tar heel Canine where he was
trained for eleven weeks, the last three with Officer Carpenter, as a
narcotics detection canine.
Ralph has recently been cross-trained in scent
discrimination trailing. Ralph and Officer Carpenter work both on the
roads of Granby and in the Granby Jr/Sr High School. While in the school
Ralph and Officer Carpenter patrol the halls to help keep the school safe
and drug free.
In Ralph's first year with the Granby Police Department, he has made
twenty four positive alerts. Three of those alerts came at the Granby High
School, two others came at Holyoke Catholic High School, and one came at
Belchertown Middle School. Ralph is also used on traffic stops. Of the
forty two traffic stops Ralph was used at, he alerted on sixteen of those
vehicle's(1 heroin, 5 cocaine, and 10 marijuana). Ralph has also sniffed one
house resulting in a positive alert and one room resulting in a positive
alert.
Ralph's father is assigned to the Baghdad airport and is used as an
explosive
detector dog- his “brother” is working in Florida at an airport- his first week
on the job he detected an RPG.
